Henkel's Dragon enters China

G

erman company Henkel recently broke ground on a new adhesives plant in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park (SCIP). Known as Project Dragon, it will also involve the consolidation of current production facilities in China to generate significant additional capacity and thus create the largest adhesives production base in the world. At full capacity, the estimated annual output will be 428,000 tonnes.

"This investment is in line with our priority to expand our business in the emerging markets," explained Kasper Rorsted, Henkel's CEO, during the groundbreaking ceremony, "China has been an important growth engine for Henkel, and we are confident that the plant will greatly enhance Henkel's growth potential in the country."

"Project Dragon" will require a total fixed asset investment of EUR50 million and will be implemented in three phases. According to the Land Agreement signed with the SCIP authority, the production site will occupy a total land area of 150,000 sq m. Henkel plans to hire 600 employees to operate the new facility.

The first batch of finished products is scheduled to be shipped from the production line during the fourth quarter of 2012. The company says the facility will have high operating standards, high operational efficiency, low energy and water consumption and low carbon emissions. It will serve as the regional base for supporting Henkel's customers' needs in China and the rest of the Asia-Pacific.
