Joint venture to expand Chinese PET film capacity

A

nother subsidiary of Teijin, Teijin DuPont Films, a joint venture partnership with E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co., will increase its China-based production of polyester film at DuPont Hongji Films Foshan (DPHJ) in Guangdong, part of the joint venture's strategy to expand its Asia regional market.

DPHJ will acquire a new site in Nan Zhuang, located in the ChanCheng district of Foshan city, initially to construct two polyester film lines, one for thick film and the other for thin film. Capital expenditure will total about US$78 million.

The thick film line will be built with an inactive production line relocated from a defunct US plant in Florence, South Carolina, which permanently closed in February. It will be used for the expanded production of competitive products for mainly photovoltaic (PV) backsheet, with operation to begin in the second half of 2012.

The thin film line will be newly constructed for the expanded production of competitive products for mainly dry film resists and flat panel displays. Operation will begin in 2013.

As a result, DPHJ's polyester film production capacity in Foshan will increase from 50,000 to 77,000 tonnes/year.

DPHJ is a joint venture between DuPont Teijin Films China and FSPG Hi-Tech. With the increased capacity and deployment of related technologies, DPHJ expects to remain China's leading manufacturer and supplier of differentiated polyester films.
