No downtime for Chinese tooling company

W

ith the upcoming Chinese New Year (CNY) holidays next month, almost of all China's manufacturing will shut down for three weeks. This poses a problem for moulders in the US and Europe coming back to work after the Western new year holidays! One company that says it will be business as usual during the holidays is Hong Kong-based tooling supplier Bluestar Mould.

Almost all of North America and Europe relaxes for two or three weeks during the holidays as they enjoy the festivities at the year end. When they finally get back into the work mode early January, they are shocked to find that their production in China is going to be delayed for weeks as a result of not having placed orders before they went on holiday. But the CNY is not till 3 February this year and you should have plenty of time to place your four week delivery order, correct? NO!

What many US and European companies fail to understand is that China is a huge country and the majority of the work force comes from the outlying provinces. Many factory workers will travel two or three days by bus or train to get home for the holiday. The CNY period is the only opportunity most people have to see their families, including their children. So this is Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving and any other holiday you can think of all wrapped up into one!

Bluestar Mould says it will rotate its staff in shifts for the holidays to ensure that customers will be able to communicate with it, especially in emergency situations. According to Philip Huang, President of BMS Group and Bluestar Mould, being a service organisation, the company has to avail itself to its customers and hence it will rotate its staff's travel plans to cater to its customers.

BSM is a global high-tech custom injection moulder and tool builder, founded in Hong Kong, with facilities in Shekou and Baoan District, Shenzhen, China, with annual sales over US$40 million. Serving the medical, industrial, appliance, consumer and automotive industries for more than 20 years, Bluestar Mould delivers the manufacturing and design solutions.
