Nordson acquires die assets of Kodama; forms new division

US-based technology solutions provider Nordson Corporation has bought certain aspects of the extrusion die assets of Kodama Chemical Industry, a long-time distributor of Nordson’s EDI (Extrusion Die Industries) business in Japan. Early this year, Nordson acquired EDI Holdings, a provider of slot coating and flat polymer extrusion dies for processors and web converters.

With this move, it will establish a new division, Nordson EDI Japan, which will serve as a direct extrusion die sales and manufacturing channel in Japan and Taiwan and remanufacturing throughout the Asia Pacific region. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The new division will showcase the organisation’s technical and manufacturing capabilities as it provides new die sales to extrusion processors, web converters and OEMs in Japan and Taiwan and carry out final manufacturing steps on new equipment to enhance die performance and accommodate local requirements. Included will be the full range of Nordson EDI flat dies, feedblocks and related equipment for film, sheet, extrusion coating and fluid coating. Die remanufacturing will be available to customers throughout the Asia Pacific region from a fully-equipped facility in Saitama, Japan.

Nordson has appointed Hidemaro Takehara, until now head of Kodama’s sales team, to be the General Manager of Nordson EDI Japan. Sales and customer support staff have relocated to a new office in Tokyo.

Nordson EDI Japan will work with its network of agents in the region. Customers in China will continue to obtain sales and remanufacturing services from Nordson EDI Precision Dies (Shanghai), which recently moved to a new, larger facility.

Meanwhile, the Saitama facility will be able to fulfill remanufacturing requirements, from flow surface repairs and refinishing to incorporation of whole new sub-systems such as automatic gauge profiling. Remanufacturing plays a critical role in the working life of a flat die, enabling the extrusion processor or converter to maintain high levels of productivity, minimise downtime for maintenance and prevent product defects.
