Thinnest extruded sheet from PC resin
Japanese Teijin Chemicals has developed a transparent, flame-retardant PC resin that is capable of extruding sheet with a thickness of 1.5 mm, making it the thinnest transparent sheet of this type.
Flame-retardant PC resins are widely used in electrical/electronic and office equipment markets and the demand for thinner grades has increased due to the development of increasingly smaller and thinner products.
The environmentally friendly PC resin, which is both bromine and phosphorous-free, has a flame resistance level equivalent to UL94V-0. Despite being capable of extruding thin sheet, the new resin has all of the inherent characteristics of PC resins, including transparency, mouldability, dimensional stability and electrical properties, says the company.
The resin is available in injection moulding and sheet extrusion moulding grades. The former can serve as a substitute for glass components in LED lights while the latter is expected to find uses in sheets mainly for LED lighting covers.
Teijin also produces UL94V-0 PC resins for sheet thicknesses starting at 2 mm.
